Music industry executives, her band mates, close friends and family gathered Tuesday at a synagogue in North London, to pay tribute to Amy Winehouse. Winehouse was found dead at her London apartment on Saturday, and her funeral, held at Edgwarebury Cemetery, was attended by about 150 people. “Goodnight my angel,” her father, Mitch, said as mourners gathered. “Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much.” “Her father’s eulogy was funny,” a spokesperson for Winehouse says. He told stories about her childhood, people were laughing like it was a celebration, like they all remembered the stories themselves. The hour-long memorial service was partially in Hebrew because of her Jewish heritage. “It was emotional, it was happy and it was sad,” her rep said. When the memorial closed Carole King’s “So Far Away,” one of Winehouse’s favorite songs that she had once performed as a duet with her father, was played. Mourners then headed to the Golders Green crematorium, where the family is following custom by having Winehouse cremated.
CONTROVERSY RISES OVER AMY WINEHOUSE’S JEWISH FUNERAL

Amy Winehouse was laid to rest on Tuesday in London with a traditional Jewish ceremony but it’s become a controversial topic given the circumstances involved. Winehouse, 27, was cremated before she was buried and was covered in tattoos, typically two major violations of Jewish law. According to a Jewish Rabbi, the dead must be buried in the earth, and not cremated, because in order to be resurrected when the messiah comes, there must be a body. He also says that charity work should not occur as a result of a Jewish person’s death, which is what Winehouse’s father planned to do in order to help those suffering with addiction. The Jewish Community Center Chabad In Manhattan Beach, California explains why tattoos are forbidden in the religion. “A person is comprised of a body and soul which are intrinsically connected. Kabbalah teaches us that what happens to our body effects our soul as well. That is why we must be very careful to take care of our body because ‘A small hole in the body creates a great hole in the soul,’ When we change the look of our body synthetically by inserting a tattoo we are also affecting our souls.” It’s unclear who made the decision to have Winehouse’s remains cremated or if she had been actively practicing her Jewish faith.

After saying goodbye at her funeral, Amy Winehouse’s father took comfort in believing she had conquered most of her demons. “Knowing she wasn’t depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, makes us all feel better,” Mitch Winehouse said Tuesday in a statement. “She was the happiest she has been for years.” Winehouse describes his daughter, who was found dead at age 27 in her London apartment Saturday, as in love, over drugs and in good spirits. Last summer, the singer first stepped out with boyfriend Reg Traviss, who helped her with her problems. Winehouse’s father said that Amy was looking forward to a future with Traviss. Mr.Winehouse also claims that Amy overcame her drug dependency three years ago, and although she was still struggling with her drinking problem, she had been alcohol-free for three weeks and was in the midst of a fantastic recovery. He also said he spoke with his daughter at least three times a day and that the night the soulful singer died, she showed no signs of depression. “She was in her room, playing drums and singing,” he reports. Adding, “As it was late, her security guard said to keep it quiet, and she did.” The security guard found her dead in her bed the next day. Mitch Winehouse is trying to turn the tragedy into something positive. He says he’s setting up the Amy Winehouse Foundation as something to help the things she loved, including children and horses while at the same time aiming to help those struggling with substance abuse. “Amy was the greatest daughter, family member and friend you could ever have,” he says.

AMY’S FRIENDS SAY AMY WAS LAYING LOW BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY

When Amy Winehouse passed away on July 23, many jumped to the conclusion that she’d overdosed after a drug binge. But sources claim that what she was really doing, was surprisingly low-key: She laid low at her London home, spent time with her mother, and had a routine doctor’s visit. In fact, while the toxicology results may not be available for weeks, those who knew her say she was much more than a party girl. “She spent most days at home writing,” says one friend. Beneath the disheveled beehive and heavy eyeliner was a slyly hilarious potty-mouth who loved to cook. “Amy was a sparkly character,” says Sarah Hurley, landlady of the Good Mixer, one of Winehouse’s favorite pubs.
